William H. Holtzclaw: The Man, His Dream, His Legacy

The purpose of this digital exhibit is to showcase the history of the Utica Normal & Industrial Institute and the man who founded it.

Dr. William H. Holtzclaw founded Utica Normal & Industrial Institute in 1903 in a rented cabin.   The Institute served as the only school in the Utica area for Negro students. The first chartered name of the college was Utica Normal and Industrial Institute for the Training of Colored Young Men and Women.  The Holtzclaw legacy continues on the Utica Campus of Hinds Community College.

The Utica Normal & Industrial Archives is a non-circulation collection housed in the Holtzclaw Memorial Library on the Utica Campus.  Access to archived materials is limited and by appointment only.

Note: The portrait of Dr. William H. Holtzclaw is by acclaimed Mississippi artist Marie Hull.
